Can You Sell a Junk Car Without a Title in Ohio?
Short answer: it's much easier to sell a junk car in Ohio with the title, and most buyers will ask for it. The good news is that replacing a lost Ohio title is usually quick and inexpensive.
Why buyers want the title
The title proves you own the vehicle and lets the buyer legally transfer, scrap or resell it. Without it, a buyer can't be sure the car isn't stolen or still owed on, so many will pass or offer less.
How to get a duplicate title in Ohio
In Ohio, titles are handled by the county Clerk of Courts title offices, not the BMV license agencies. To replace a lost title:
- Visit any Ohio county Clerk of Courts title office (in Franklin County there are several locations).
- Bring a valid photo ID and your vehicle information (VIN, year, make and model).
- Pay the duplicate title fee. It's a small fee — check the Clerk of Courts website for the current amount.
In many cases you can walk out with the duplicate the same day.
If there's still a loan on the car
If the title lists a lienholder (a bank or lender), you'll need a lien release from them before you can sell. If the loan is paid off, ask the lender to send the release, then take it to the title office.
Can I sell it with no title at all?
Some buyers can work with other proof of ownership depending on the vehicle's age and Ohio rules, but it varies. The simplest move is to tell the buyer up front. When you request your offer, choose "No" or "Not sure" for the title question and the buyer will explain your options.
Signing the title over
Ohio requires the seller's signature on the title to be notarized. Don't sign it ahead of time — sign in front of a notary (many banks and some buyers can help with this). See our Ohio junk car selling checklist for everything to have ready on pickup day.
