Fix It or Sell It? How to Decide When Your Car Breaks Down
When a car breaks down, the repair estimate can feel like a gut punch. Here's a simple way to decide whether to fix it or sell it as-is.
The 50% rule
If the repair costs more than about half of what the car would be worth after it's fixed, selling usually makes more sense. Look up your car's value in good running condition, compare it to the estimate, and be honest about what else is likely to fail soon.
Signs it's time to sell
- The problem is the engine or transmission.
- It's the second or third major repair in a year.
- There's heavy rust or frame damage.
- It failed inspection and the fixes add up.
- It's been sitting for weeks and you've stopped thinking about fixing it.
- You're paying insurance or registration on a car you don't drive.
When fixing makes sense
- The car is newer and otherwise in good shape.
- The repair is a known one-time fix (battery, alternator, starter, brakes).
- You can't easily replace the car right now and the repair keeps you on the road.
Selling as-is is easier than you think
You don't need to get the car running or towed anywhere. Tell us about it and a local Columbus buyer will make a cash offer and pick it up for free. Before pickup day, check our Ohio selling checklist.
