Ohio Junk Car Selling Checklist: What You Need on Pickup Day
Pickup day goes fastest when you have everything ready. Here's what to do before the tow truck shows up.
Before pickup
- Find your title. Make sure it's in your name. Lost it? See how to get a duplicate in Ohio.
- Don't sign the title yet. Ohio requires the seller's signature to be notarized, so sign in front of a notary.
- Have a photo ID ready. The name should match the title.
- Get a lien release if the title shows a lender.
- Clean out personal items. Check the glove box, trunk, under the seats and the sun visors. Remove garage door openers and toll transponders.
- Make it easy to reach. Let the buyer know if it's in a tight spot, has flat tires or the keys are missing.
At pickup
- Confirm the price before it's hooked up. It should match your offer if the car is as you described.
- Remove your license plates. In Ohio, plates stay with the owner, not the car.
- Get paid and get a receipt or bill of sale showing the date, price, VIN and the buyer's information.
After the sale
- Cancel or move your insurance โ but only after the car is gone.
- Keep your receipt in case any tickets or tolls show up later.
- Turn in or transfer your plates as allowed by the Ohio BMV.
